[Neutrino Thunder D3] Why do both LED's light up even though I have installed only one drive?

When using the USB interface on the Neutrino Thunder D3, it's normal for both HDD LED's to flash during data access even when only one drive is installed. When using the Thunderbolt connection, only the corresponding LED for the drive that is actually installed lights up.
